TatryThe Spiš region is one of the most beautiful regions in Slovakia. It is characterized by unusual nature, great amount of historical monuments and preserving of folk traditions. The northern side is bordered by the peaks of the High Tatras traversing through the Belianske Tatras to the unique scenery of the Pieniny range with the river Dunajec. The east is enclosed by the range Levočské pohorie. The southern side of the Spiš region is edged by the range Spišsko-gemerské rudohorie and the Slovak Paradise. Region is also possible been localized by the river-basin of two biggest rivers – the rivers Poprad and Hornád. Recognition sign is that Spiš rivers flow to north and to east and Liptov rivers run westwards. The greatest attraction is the range High Tatras attracting record-braking number of the visitors yearly. With regard to international criterion, the Slovak Paradise as well as the range Pieniny is famous by its incomparable atmosphere. Precious metals, cupper and iron have been mined for hundreds of years in the area of the range Spišsko-gemerské rudohorie. In the PltníciSpiš region various mineral springs well forth, too. Water from the villages Baldovce and Nová Ľubovňa is used for drinking, thermal water in the village Vrbovo is used for bathing, discovery to healing water in the village Vyšné Ružbachy called into existence of modern spa town. Moreover, the Spiš region is known also by wonderful forests and rich fauna and flora. Many protected animal and botanical species are preserved there thanks to the special environmental units.

From demographic point of view, the Spiš region is varied unit mainly in the sphere of nationality and religion. The Slovaks had created and still create majority of inhabitants. The German colonist came into this area in 12th century. In the northern border, there live the Gorals whose dialect is closed to Polish language. Since 14th century, the Ruthenians have started to populate the Spiš region and they brought eastern Christianity to this area. Many Jews lived there, too.Hrad v Starej Ľubovni The amount of the Romanys has been increasing since 15th century. Nowadays, the Catholics with Latin and Eastern Christianity, the Orthodox believers, the Evangelic with Augsburg confession live there. In the past, many members of Israelite religion lived there as well. Heterogeneity of the population has caused creation of innumerable cultural values mirroring the uniqueness of habitat.

Treasured monuments are almost in every village. In the Spiš region, there is number of sights on file of The List of World Natural and Cultural Monuments UNESCO (the castle Spiš hrad, the manor house Spišská Kapitula, the villages Spišské Podhradie and Žehra, the cave Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa). These are the monuments registered as national cultural sights from which we choose the Work of Master Paul from Levoča, the Spiš Castle, the Kežmarok Evangelic Lyceum and the articular church in Žehra. Almost half of all Slovak town historical reserves are situated in the Spiš region. In the past, the town Levoča belonged to the most important free royal towns of Ugria. The town Kežmarok Spišský hradserved (besides other functions) also as educational place. The manor house Spišská Kapitula was and still is referred to as spiritual centre of the Spiš region.

The village Gelnica was centre of mining work. Spišská Sobota creates the historical centre of the town Poprad. In recent years, the towns Spišská Nová Ves and Poprad have evolved into significant towns.
